Ms. Stephanie L. Lighter

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Ms. Stephanie Lighter graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in May 2014 with two BS degrees in biology and psychology. As an undergraduate, she was inducted into numerous honors societies, including Phi Beta Kappa and Golden Key International Honour Society. She was a teaching assistant for a writing course at her university and an English tutor for international students at the Maryland English Institute. She also volunteered as an English teacher at Bhanu Secondary School in Chitwan, Nepal in summer 2013.

While she has enjoyed her teaching roles, Stephanie also has a passion for global health and gender equality. In summer 2012 she traveled to the North Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh to study public health issues in the region. While there, she discovered her passion not only for the healthcare of women, but also for the people and culture of India. After Fulbright, she hopes to pursue a joint program in which she will receive a master's degree in global public health and a license as a nurse practitioner for women's health.

Ms. Lighter is excited to return to India as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. Her research project examines the health education Indian children receive in public schools. She is particularly eager to study how the country teaches topics such as reproductive health and mental health.
