While in New Delhi, Mr. Phelan lived in a homestay, improved his Hindi, and researched in the National Archives of India, before heading off to the British Library in London. Eventually, Mr. Phelan's project about the creation of Jim Corbett's National Park won recognition and awards, including the Boston College history department award for distinguished historical scholarship. Mr. Phelan was also chosen as one of a few Boston College students to present original research at the ACC Meeting of the Minds hosted by the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. While an undergraduate, Mr. Phelan also received grants to live and study in Kolkata, West Bengal. In Kolkata, Mr. Phelan improved his Hindi, in addition to studying educational pedagogy.
After graduation, Mr. Phelan worked as a history instructor at Dexter Southfield School in Brookline, Massachusetts. While at Dexter Southfield, Mr. Phelan taught high school modern world history and U.S. history. On campus, he also served as an advisor, and coached cross country, hockey, and lacrosse.
Mr. Phelan enjoys outdoor adventures and outdoor education. He is also a leader of many types of outdoor trips for L.L. Bean and is a certified Wilderness First Responder as well as a certified instructor in paddleboarding. In addition, Mr. Phelan is an avid reader and writer with several publications and his own website, home to much of his own original travel writing, poetry, and journalism. Mr. Phelan's experiences with India are also detailed in his book The Local School, which blends genres of history, narrative journalism, and travel writing. The story details Mr. Phelan's experiences in Kolkata and Uttarakhand. Mr. Phelan also enjoys theater and improvisation.
